Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 has bigger engine size than Yamaha YZF-R3 but this is not a direct indicator for more power or better performance. The second bike has the advantage of greater compression ratio of 11.5:1 than the other one. This is the ration of the volumes in the cylinder in two stages of the stroke when the piston is at the lowest and then at the highest point in the cylinder. When the mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber has bigger pressure (higher compression ratio) when it is ignited then it burns more effectively and therefore these bikes tend to have better fuel economy (comparing engines with equal displacement).
The bike with a better fuel economy is the Yamaha YZF-R3 which can travel 56 miles with one gallon of fuel. Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 on the contrary can travel 37.6 miles with a gallon. When measured in mpg the fuel economy shows how many miles can be traveled with a gallon of fuel. Alternatively when measure in l\100km it shows the fuel consumption in litters per 100 kilometer trip.
front and rear tires The producer of each bike specifies the sizes of its front and rear tyre. The right choice also depends on your style of riding, whether you are speeding and riding agressively. Tires have a code of numbers and letters printed on their sides and these are important to be understood properly when looking for matching tires. Firstly the code shows the width of the tire measured in millimeters. The second number show the aspect ratio. How many inches is the diameter of the rim - that is what the tird number reveals. Buying motorcycle tires online can save you precious time and cash.
Yamaha YZF-R3 has a better ground clearance of 160mm ( for Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 it is 135mm). The ground clearance is also called the ride height and that is the distance between the base of the tyre and underside of the motorcycle’s body (the chassis). To say it shortly, this is the smallest of the measures between the road surface and any mechanical part of the motorcycle.
Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is the bike with higher tested top speed (246km/h). On the other side Yamaha YZF-R3 can achieve speed of 179km/h on the highway. However sources may vary as to whether these top speed parameters are precise or only approximate.Liquid cooled motorcycle engine
Yamaha YZF-R3 and Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 are both liquid cooled. The pretty constant ranges of operating temperature are typical for the liquid cooled engines. Keeping the operating temperature at a very narrow range allows many engine components to be optimised for these temperatures. The liquid (coolant) is forced by the water pump to circulate from the radiator to the engine and back. The amount of cooling can be regulated via thermostat, which helps holding the temperature at a relatively constant level. However the water pump, the thermostat, the radiator and all the linking gear makes it a bit more complex.
chain final drive Chain final drive is used with both motorcycles - the Yamaha YZF-R3 and the Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. One of the most economical way to drive horsepower from the engine to the rear wheel of the motorcycle is achieved with the chain drive and therefore it is still the most used among the three options by bike manufacturers. Many bikers may complain of the need of constant care though. Since the chain is exposed to dust, sun and rain it needs to be periodically cleaned and properly lubricated.
Compression ratio Imagine an engine's piston is at the bottom of its stroke (step one) and moves up compressing the gas in the cylinder till it reaches its top position of the stroke (step 2). The compression ratio is the ration of the volume in step one over the volume in step two. Its value for Yamaha YZF-R3 is 11.2:1 and for Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is 11.5:1 based on the technical data of the motorcycles. This is actually the relation between the biggest and the smallest capacity of the combustion chamber. It plays a big role in engine efficiency because bigger compression ratio means better thermal efficiency and more mileage with the same amount of gas.
One of the most important aspects of the basic level of maintenance of a motorcycle is the engine oil. Mineral and part-synthetic engine oils are cheaper when it comes to price in comparison with the most technically advanced synthetic motor oils. It is commonly accepted engine oil to be changed on every 3700 miles (6000 kilometers). Synthetic oil can be changed less often though. Some oil filters can be replaced on every second oil change while others are to be replaced on each oil change. The technical specs show that the Yamaha YZF-R3 takes 2.4 litres of engine oil while the oil capacity of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is 3.7 litres. This oil capacity values are with informative purpose only. The proper amount of oil needed is best judged while observing the reading on the level sight window (or the dipstick).
