motorcycle reviews: Yamaha Honda Suzuki Kawasaki BMW Harley Davidson Aprilia Ducati Triumph KTM Hyosung |
Looking at the detailed specifications of both motorcycles Honda VFR 800 VTEC and Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is a proper approach to determine which of the two is more likely to match your style of riding and to satisfy your preferences. You certainly have your own comfort zones in speeding, handling and sitting position and these should guide you to your choice of motorcycle. A good way to narrow the circle of favourite bikes is to compare their technical specifications and select just a few that are really matching your style and needs. The best way to explore them is to actually sit on these bikes and check how much comfort you get with each of them.
The bigger engine size of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 in comparison to Honda VFR 800 VTEC doesn't mean that it is more powerful or better performing bike. The first bike has the advantage of greater compression ratio of 11.6:1 than the other one. This parameter shows how the volume in the engine cylinder when the piston is at the bottom end relates to the volume when the piston is at the top end. When the mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber has bigger pressure (higher compression ratio) when it is ignited then it burns more effectively and therefore these bikes tend to have better fuel economy (comparing engines with equal displacement). The bike with a better fuel economy is the Honda VFR 800 VTEC which can travel 37.9 miles with one gallon of fuel. Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 on the contrary can travel 37.6 miles with a gallon. When measured in mpg the fuel economy shows how many miles can be traveled with a gallon of fuel. Alternatively when measure in l\100km it shows the fuel consumption in litters per 100 kilometer trip. ![]() The ground clearance (ride height) of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is 135mm and is smaller than the clearance of Honda VFR 800 VTEC which is 160mm. The ground clearance is also called the ride height and that is the distance between the base of the tyre and underside of the motorcycle’s body (the chassis). In simple terms that would be the shortest line among all the lines drawn between the surface of the road and any mechanical part of the motorcycle. Honda VFR 800 VTEC is the bike with higher tested top speed (257km/h). On the other side Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 can achieve speed of 246km/h on the highway. However sources may vary as to whether these top speed parameters are precise or only approximate. ![]() Honda VFR 800 VTEC and Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 are both liquid cooled. Liquid-cooled engines have a narrower range of operating temperatures compared to the air-cooled ones. Once the operating temperature is reached (the engine is warmed up), it runs at a pretty constant temperature. The liquid (coolant) is forced by the water pump to circulate from the radiator to the engine and back. The amount of cooling can be regulated via thermostat, which helps holding the temperature at a relatively constant level. Liquid-cooled engines are usually more forgiving because the hot engine has some surrounding coolant to heat up before causing any damage from overheating. ![]() Compression ratio of a motorcycle engine is the ratio of the volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at the bottom of the stoke and its volume when the piston is at the top of the stroke. The compressio ratio of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is 11.5:1 and it is 11.6:1 for Honda VFR 800 VTEC according to the motorcycles technical data above. Motorcycles with higher compression ratio may be recommended to use premium fuel only in order to avoid engine knocking. If you got a motorcycle with a greater compression ratio for its specific engine it is getting better fuel economy than it would if it had a lesser compression ratio. Engine oil is among the most important aspects of an engines health. There are different types at different prices on the market - mineral, highperformance, all-purpose part-synthetic and synthetic oil. The oil is usually to be changed after 6000km (3700 miles) after the previous oil change. The quality of the synthetic oil allows up to 5000 miles (8000 km) between oil changes. Depending on the oil filter it needs to be replaced on each or every two oil changes. Both motorcycles have different oil capacity according to the technical specs - 3.1 litres for Honda VFR 800 VTEC and 3.7 litres for Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. The oil capacity information is only to get an idea of how much oil roughly will be needed on oilchange. Pouring exactly the proper amount of oil needed is achieved by observing the level sight window or the dipstick marks. |
