Looking at the detailed specifications of both motorcycles BMW K1200S and Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is a proper approach to determine which of the two is more likely to match your style of riding and to satisfy your preferences. The decision on your next motorcycle purchase should be all based on your personal preferences for speed, handling and comfort. A good way to narrow the circle of favourite bikes is to compare their technical specifications and select just a few that are really matching your style and needs. Then the most appropriate judgement can be made when each of them is taken for a real ride.

Although BMW K1200S has a bigger engine displacement than Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 it doesn't necessarily mean it is more powerful or better performing bike. The first bike has the advantage of greater compression ratio of 13:1 than the other one. This ratio is the relation of the volume in the cylinder when the piston is at the bottom of the stroke to the volume in the cylinder when the gas is compressed and the piston is at the top of the stroke. When the mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber has bigger pressure (higher compression ratio) when it is ignited then it burns more effectively and therefore these bikes tend to have better fuel economy (comparing engines with equal displacement).
The bike with a better fuel economy is the BMW K1200S which can travel 42 miles with one gallon of fuel. Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 on the contrary can travel 37.6 miles with a gallon. Measuring the fuel economy in mpg shows how many miles of ride are covered by a gallon of fuel and measuring in l/100km shows the average fuel consumption in litters for every 100 kilometers riding.
front and rear tires The producer of each bike specifies the sizes of its front and rear tyre. Another considerable factor here is your own riding style. To choose the right tire size firstly you need to understand the meaning of the numbers printed on the size of the tire. The width of the tire measured in millimeters is shown first. Both motorcycles BMW K1200S and Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 have the same width of their tires - 120 mm for the front tire and 190 mm for the rear one. The aspect ratio of the tire is represented by the second number of the code. The third number shows the size of the rim - its diameter measured in inches. Looking online for motorcycle tires is a good way to easily find the right size at low price.
BMW K1200S has bigger ground clearance than Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 (157mm vs 135mm). The distance between the chassis and the base of the tyre is called ride height or also ground clearance of a motorcycle and is usually given in millimeters in the technical specifications. This is the shortest line between the body of a motorcycle and the surface of the road.
BMW K1200S is the faster of the two with top speed of 285 kilometers per hour against the max speed of 246 km/h specified to its opponent Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. However sources may vary as to whether these top speed parameters are precise or only approximate.Motorcycle with liquid cooling system
BMW K1200S is liquid cooled and so is the Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. The pretty constant ranges of operating temperature are typical for the liquid cooled engines. Therefore liquid cooled motors can run with carburetion set to burn all the fuel in the mixture. The coolant is circulating into the radiator and back to the engine driven by the water pump. The amount of cooling can be regulated via thermostat, which helps holding the temperature at a relatively constant level. However the water pump, the thermostat, the radiator and all the linking gear makes it a bit more complex.
As per their technical specifications both motorcycles have different types of final drive implementation.
motorcycle with chain final drive The Yamaha Fazer FZ-1is driven by a chain. One of the most economical way to drive horsepower from the engine to the rear wheel of the motorcycle is achieved with the chain drive and therefore it is still the most used among the three options by bike manufacturers. The down points of the chain drive are the frequent maintenance required as it needs to be regularly cleaned and oiled. Besides it is not as smooth as a shaft or belt drive. The BMW K1200S is driven by shaft.
Compression ratio - this parameter refers to how the cylinder's space changes from when the piston is down at its lowest point to when the piston is up at its highest point in the stroke. Its value for BMW K1200S is 13:1 and for Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is 11.5:1 based on the technical data of the motorcycles. To avoid engine knocking when compression ratio is high those motorcycles might be recommended to use premium fuel only. It plays a big role in engine efficiency because bigger compression ratio means better thermal efficiency and more mileage with the same amount of gas.
To keep the engine in good health it is important to observe the good qulity and proper level of the motor oil. Many different types of engine oils are available as minerral, part-synthetic and synthetic and they all come at different price. 3700 miles (6000 km) between oil changes is widely accepted rule. More kilometers between two oil changes is accepted when synthetic oil is used. A good practice is to replace the oil filter with each or every second oil change. Both motorcycles have different oil capacity according to the technical specs - 3.8 litres for BMW K1200S and 3.7 litres for Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. This oil capacity values are with informative purpose only. Observing the currrent level on the dipstick or the level sight window is the best way to pour the proper amount of oil.
