motorcycle reviews: Yamaha Honda Suzuki Kawasaki BMW Harley Davidson Aprilia Ducati Triumph KTM Hyosung |
To compare the technical specifications and features of Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 and Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is a good way to find out which one of these motorcycles will better match your style and requirements. You certainly have your own comfort zones in speeding, handling and sitting position and these should guide you to your choice of motorcycle. If you compare the motorcycles you are interested in by analysing their technical specifications, features and pictures, the list of favourite ones could be shortened to just a few models. Then the most appropriate judgement can be made when each of them is taken for a real ride.
The bigger engine size of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 in comparison to Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 doesn't mean that it is more powerful or better performing bike. The second bike has the advantage of greater compression ratio of 11.5:1 than the other one. It represents the relation between the biggest and the smallest volume in the combustion chamber while the piston is performing its stroke movement. When the mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber has bigger pressure (higher compression ratio) when it is ignited then it burns more effectively and therefore these bikes tend to have better fuel economy (comparing engines with equal displacement). The bike with a better fuel economy is the Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 which can travel 43.6 miles with one gallon of fuel. Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 on the contrary can travel 37.6 miles with a gallon. When measured in mpg the fuel economy shows how many miles can be traveled with a gallon of fuel. Alternatively when measure in l\100km it shows the fuel consumption in litters per 100 kilometer trip. ![]() The ground clearance (ride height) of Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 is 130mm and is smaller than the clearance of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 which is 135mm. The distance between the chassis and the base of the tyre is called ride height or also ground clearance of a motorcycle and is usually given in millimeters in the technical specifications. In simple terms that would be the shortest line among all the lines drawn between the surface of the road and any mechanical part of the motorcycle. Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is the bike with higher tested top speed (246km/h). On the other side Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 can achieve speed of 224km/h on the highway. However sources may vary as to whether these top speed parameters are precise or only approximate. ![]() Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 is liquid cooled and so is the Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. Liquid-cooled engines have a narrower range of operating temperatures compared to the air-cooled ones. Therefore the liquid-cooled engine runs more efficiently and consistently. The water pump drives the coolant from the engine into the radiator and back. A thermostat turns on an electric fan to draw more air over the radiator in case the motorcycle slows down and the air flowing through the radiator is not enough to cool the liquid inside it to the desired level. Liquid-cooled engines are usually more forgiving because the hot engine has some surrounding coolant to heat up before causing any damage from overheating. ![]() Compression ratio Imagine an engine's piston is at the bottom of its stroke (step one) and moves up compressing the gas in the cylinder till it reaches its top position of the stroke (step 2). The compression ratio is the ration of the volume in step one over the volume in step two. Based on the information from the technical data of the motorcycles the values are accordingly 11:1 for Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 and 11.5:1 for Yamaha Fazer FZ-1. Premium fuel might be recommended for some motorcycles with high levels of compression ration in order to avoid engine knocking. With internal combustion engines the higher compression ratio allows higher efficiency because the combustion temperature is reached with less fuel. Motorcycle oil is one of the most important components that keeps the engine running smoothly. Synthetic engine oils are considered the most technically advanced one and are more expensive than the mineral oils which come at lower price. As a general rule it should be changed on every 6000 kilometers or 3700 miles. With synthetic oil though you can run as far as 8000 kilometers (5000 miles). The oil filter needs to be replaced too and that is usually to be done with the oil change. The technical specs show that the Aprilia SL SHIVER 750 takes 3.2 litres of engine oil while the oil capacity of Yamaha Fazer FZ-1 is 3.7 litres. When changing the oil it is advisable to put less than the specified oil capacity and to check the level. Pouring exactly the proper amount of oil needed is achieved by observing the level sight window or the dipstick marks. |
